The scented thorn tree is semi-deciduous with rough and deep fissured bark

Grows up to 9 metres tall in dry woodland and riverine areas. The scented thorn tree is taken as an indicator of "sweetveld"
Flowers from September to April and fruits from March to September.

This tree is highly prized by browsers such as
Giraffe, Kudu, Eland, Nyala, and Impala. The pods are eaten by these animals.

The roots and dry pods when boiled can be used as ink. A decoction of the bark is used for the treatment of ulcers and leprosy and the root can be used for the treatment of tuberculosis. The gum that exudes from the stem is edible and can be used for the treatment of sore throat.
